Neottia cordata var. nephrophylla fma. rubescens

Listera or Neottia cordata is an orchid that grows in Eurasia as well as North America.  This variety is found from the Rockies west and north to Alaska and is generally larger than variety cordata, with is in our area confined to northern Alberta and British Columbia.  It is the smallest and most inconspicuous of our native orchids, the whole plant six inches or less in height and the flowers around one centimeter.  We usually see it at higher altitudes and in large numbers but these, the first of the season, were photographed near sea level in an area where there are usually less than a dozen plants.  These are forma rubescens, a reddish-flowered form of a plant that usually has green flowers.
